Code Ninjas Lubbock to celebrate National STEM Day with Open House
LUBBOCK , TX — Code Ninjas Lubbock will host a National STEM Day Open House event on Friday, Nov. 8 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. for area children and their families. The nationwide STEM Day celebration invites kids to “N-O-V8” (say it aloud) and experience firsthand how much fun STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) can be. The event is free to the public.
The event will feature hands-on exhibitions from the Texas Tech University Whitacre College of Engineering, including a Get Excited About Robotics (GEAR) demonstration, a glimpse into the future of Augmented Reality (AR) with dinosaurs, an earthquakeproof tower building challenge, and many other activities.
Participants will also be able to experience a sample of Code Ninjas’ world-class coding curriculum where children ages 4–14 can learn to code in a fun, self-paced environment by creating their very own video games.
“Our goal at all age levels is to teach kids how to think and problem-solve like a coder”
-Amy Slaughter, owner and center director.
With the demand for STEM careers growing by almost a million new jobs per year, Code Ninjas Lubbock opened in September with a mission to get kids excited about the STEM fields. The center’s flagship after school drop-in program uses a martial arts style belt system, moving Ninjas through nine belt levels (white belt to black belt) as they learn diverse coding languages like Scratch, JavaScript, Lua, Unity 3D, and C# with real world robotics applications sprinkled throughout.
A brand new Code Ninjas JR offering even allows preschoolers as young as 4 to begin learning coding by playing games and solving problems in a completely visual interface — no reading required.
“Our goal at all age levels is to teach kids how to think and problem-solve like a coder, gaining confidence in the process,” said Amy Slaughter, Code Ninjas Lubbock owner and center director. “Technology isn’t going away, but what makes our kids (and parents) love Code Ninjas so much is that we are showing kids how to become more than passive consumers of technology, but instead actually understand how it works and help create it.”
In addition to the drop-in program, Code Ninjas offers STEM-based birthday parties, camps, and Parent’s Night Out events throughout the year. Private events for local schools and home school groups are also offered.
Code Ninjas Lubbock is located at 6305 66th St., Suite #400. The National STEM Day Event is free and open to the public.
